Catalogs and Shelving
The Library uses an online catalog is accessible via our website. The catalog can be searched by title, author, subject, series, keyword, etc. The catalog will supply the location, call number, the title and author, status of item.
Adult and young adult books are located on the upper-level while children's books are located on the lower-level. Materials must be checked out on their respective levels.
Fiction books are shelved by type and author/title. The “call number” may be made up of a combination of the following:
FIC = fiction
SF = science fiction
W = western
M = mystery
LG PRINT = large print
J = junior section
JE = junior picture books
ER = junior easy reader books
YA = young adult section
PB = paperback section
NR = new reader
The call number usually ends with the first three letters of the author’s name.
Common call numbers include:
J PB STI = a junior paperback fiction book with author beginning with STI
M FIC DEA = mystery fiction, author begins with DEA
SF FIC ASI = science fiction, perhaps by Isaac Asimov
PB ROB = paperback section, perhaps by Nora Roberts
Nonfiction books are shelved using the Dewey Decimal System. The call number will be three digits left of the decimal and up to five digits right of the decimal, again followed by the first three letters of the author’s name. General categories of call numbers are:
000 – Generalities
100 – Philosophy & Psychology
200 – Religion
300 – Social Sciences
400 – Language
500 – Natural Sciences & Mathematics
600 – Technology (Applied Sciences)
700 – The Arts
800 – Literature & Rhetoric
900 – Geography & History
Each general category is broken down into many subcategories.
The book entitled “The Complete Legal Guide to Senior Care” by Brette McWhorter Sember has the call number 344.7303 SEM.
Magazines are shelved alphabetically by title. Magazines for adults and newspapers are located in the periodicals section adjacent to the circulation desk. Children’s and Young Adult magazines are shelved in their own areas.
Videos are shelved by category (comedy, family, animated, documentary, etc.) and then by the first letter of the first major word in the title. The Wizard of Oz is under “W”, in the “Family” section. The DVD about Kentucky is in the “Travel” section under “K”.
Talking books and Books on CD are shelved just like books, but in their own section. The Children’s section and Young Adult section have their own collection of talking books and Books on CD.
New books are placed in a “new” section for a period of time. New adult books are shelved near the circulation desk. New junior books are shelved nearest to the entrance to the children's section. New young adult, new large print, new science fiction, and new talking books are all shelved separately within their own areas of the library.
For digital materials, the Library uses OverDrive, found in our Catalog & My Account page or in the white box found on the top right of all pages. Materials can be sorted by either audiobook or E-book, and further be categorized by fiction, non-fiction or subdivided by genre. This catalog can be searched via the link at the top of the Library's website.
